Street Based Work

About us

Our Street Based team work with young people aged 11-25, we work with young people wherever they are; street corners, parks and areas where young people are known to socialise. We offer a variety of interventions which include sign posting and referral to organisations that offer specialist and individual support. We also work with other partners to deliver projects and activities in community settings. Relationships with young people are built on voluntary relationships, based on trust, respect and an understanding of a street based Youth Worker. All staff members are locally or nationally qualified in Youth and Community work.

We also offer a mobile youth provision in a form of a bus that visits many areas of the city. This offers information, support and guidance, as well as projects and activities that are relevant to young people. The bus also supports the wider youth service, community partners and other local authority services in delivering support to young people and communities across the city.

Who we work with

Street based workers work with a variety of partners which include: Cardiff City Foundation, Voluntary and third sector organisations, Public Health, Homelessness Services, South Wales Police & neighbourhood PCSO's, Careers Wales, Youth Mentoring Services, YMCA, Switched On, Emotional Wellbeing, Job Centre, Family Gateway and wider council services.

The goals of Street based workers are to provide creative, adequate, appropriate and effective support networks for young people to engage with, as well as offering enriched experiences and supportive relationships. Through voluntary based relationships, they aim to encourage young people to learn, develop and grow.

Operating Types

Our general operating hours within communities are 6-9pm Mondays and Wednesdays. We do, however, adopt a flexible approach to meet the needs of communities. In each area there are two Youth Workers that are on hand to speak to young people and offer support.

Splott & Tremorfa:   6-9pm

Ely & Caerau:   6-9pm

Butetown, Riverside & Grangetown:   6-9pm

We also currently operate in the city centre on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays:   1-4pm

How to access our support

Street based workers are identifiable within communities through their branded uniform (a picture can be found below). We are very approachable, friendly and happy to offer support. All support offered will be treated as confidential unless we feel you or others are at risk of harm. If you would like to get in touch, please contact us through our social media, email or by phone.
